November 2010
quickandcurious asked: Put up a floating shelf and stack the gifts on there! (If there are bows, don't put them on until you're ready to give the gifts away.) Makes for a pretty and festive decoration, and you can put other things on the shelf the rest of the year.

I hate how I never have a good place to store Christmas gifts. I buy them and wrap them and then… they sit in a really obvious and inconvenient corner of a room of my house. December 26th is a relief because then I have room to move again. Where do you store gifts you plan on giving people?

Anne Hathaway's apartment in 'Love and Other...
I got really excited when I saw this photo slide show on Casa Sugar. Then I saw the movie.
It was terrible. I hated all the characters, the nudity was unnecessary (well, except for Jake Gyllenhaal’s, because that’s always necessary), and it was boooooring. But Anne Hathaway’s character’s studio is interesting to look at.

How to Decide Where to Live →
“People look at the choice of location as a smorgasbord of great things to eat. But instead, think about it as looking in the garbage can. The hardest thing about moving is not what you get - the good stuff is always good. It’s what you give up. So think about what you love, and what you’re willing to give up. Finding a location is just like finding a mate. It’s about compromise, and there’s...

Bits of our (Thanksgiving) weekend: Wine and...
On Saturday night, my friend Nicole and I went to Wine and Design. The idea is that you drink wine, listen to music and attempt to follow the instructions of the instructor. You end up with a replica (of sorts) inspired by a famous piece of art. We did Van Gogh’s ‘Dogwoods’. [This is what the original looks like.]
Nicole, part-way through the painting.
Me, contemplating...

Bits of our (Thanksgiving) weekend: Time with...
Got to hang out with my cousin who is going to be moving back here soon.
Also got to hang out with my mom, who I see at least twice a week but is still one of my most favorite people on the planet.

Bits of our (Thanksgiving) weekend.
My family gathered at my grandparents’ house for a potluck-style Thanksgiving dinner. My contributions included chocolate pecan pies from one of my new cookbooks…
…and the same to-die-for sweet potato casserole as last year.

Thrifting in Mebane?
I’m planning a shopping expedition in Mebane (the new outlets + more fun stuff). I know I’ve heard of several thrift/antique stores that are supposed to be amazing, but my mind is drawing a blank and google searches are fruitless…I even have vague recollections of an antique “mall” being discussed.
Does anyone know of any must-see thrift/antique stores out that way?

Holiday cards at Shutterfly
You may already be aware of this, but Shutterfly is offering 50 free holiday cards to bloggers who post about their holiday products.
Why not? I had already decided to use them for my photo cards, just due to word of mouth. It began when I was shopping around for a site on which to (finally) make a wedding album, and several friends recommended Shutterfly. I was told that the service is quick and...

Bits of our weekend: Saturday night.
Found some new music, watched a favorite show, caught up on some internet. Also cooked my favorite French Onion soup, and read by my favorite scented candle. Quiet and relaxing after about 12 hours straight of being on my feet.

Bits of our weekend: Saturday brunch.
My mom and I co-hosted a brunch on Saturday morning. It was so much fun.
I think that a lot of people, specifically the under-30 set, are really lousy hosts. I can’t tell you how many parties I’ve been to where the hosts don’t offer a beverage, let alone introduce you to someone you might have something in common with! I’m not perfect in this area, either, which is why...

Bits of our weekend: Dinner at Milltown.
We decided to introduce bff Lexi and her man to one of our favorite local restaurants, Milltown.
It was a very fun and delicious double date. And we followed it up with a VIP showing of ‘Harry Potter’!

Raleigh & Durham featured as "Axis of Cool" by NYT →
“With its food trucks, design collectives and rehabbed downtowns, the Research Triangle — the patch of North Carolina that is home to Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and 150,000 college students — seems to be yet another hipster vibe factory. It’s Silver Lake, you think, just with a few more ‘‘yes, ma’ams.’’ But then you taste the okra and sniff the heirloom tomatoes. You meet an ex-vegan who’s...
